Grand Designs – Woodbridge Revisit

We went back to the Woodbridge build last night, the story began six years ago when Lucie Fairweather and Nat McBride set out to build an affordable eco home for their family. However before the project got off the ground the couple discovered that Nat had cancer and within a few months had passed away.

However not discouraged by the loss of her husband, Lucie decided to carry on with the project with the support of family and friends and build the dream home the couple had envisioned. There were huge demands on widow Lucie who was now a single working mum who not only had to support her family but also work on the new home.

They set out to disprove misconceptions of eco houses at the time, with a modern and contemporary build which also has to fit into the tight planning restrictions of the area. The home had to be multipurpose for the family to live and work in, making the most out of the small site. The home was designed to be quite open planned and light as well as being functional for their two children.

For many people delays and problems come from building issues, not the death of your spouse, however with Lucie choosing to carry on shows, the determination which she had throughout the build process. There were some changes from the original design, to fit the new reduced budget, however Lucie did still manage to salvage a lot of the eco designs and keep costs down.

When revisiting this modern and eco build, we find that Lucie still loves the overall look of the home. The home shows how functional it is with the rooms changing use over the years to fit the families changing needs. However the heart of the home is still used the same.

The modern and light bathroom, featured a simple and seamless design with white tilling, interlaced with coloured lines from the walls and down the side of the bath and across the floor. Villeroy and Bock stock a fantastic range of brightly coloured tile which you can use to re-create a similar look, with colours of your choice.

Simple toilet, bath and sink in white. If you like the tilled bath idea, fit a Roca Contesa ECO Steel bath 1700 x 700mm bath with cladding around which you can tile. We also stock, beautiful and simple Grohe taps which offer the same great style found in this bathroom. For more ideas, seen in the show and others, please check out our Grand Designs page.

New Office Toilet for UK Bathrooms

One thing we noticed when we moved into our larger offices, was the toilet really wasn’t suitable. As a bathroom retailer, it had to be a showcase room so in December 2012 we set about updating it from the truly bad state it was in to a stylish modern toilet which was also functional and environmentally friendly.

UK Before an after

Like many old office toilets, ours looked in a sad state, as you can see below with beige tiles (coming off the walls in certain areas) dated sink and toilet and drab and dark lighting and a worn floor. So we had quite a challenge on our hands, good job we had some fantastic new products at our disposal!

UK Bathrooms Office Toilets – Before

The whole room had to be gutted, which included stripping back the old tiles on the walls, after removing the old tiles, we then discovered the original Victorian red brick tiles. Unfortunately they didn’t work with our new scheme, so we preserved them by tiling over them carefully. We also ripped up the flooring and installed new plumbing with a concealed cistern with wall hung frame. This was all boxed in neatly with the fan at one end of the room, so all the plumbing will be hidden as you can see below.

We tiled the back wall, where the wall hung toilet will go, with some lovely feature tiles, which came from our sister company Ripon Interiors, they are a Grey Mosaic sheet, by Atlas Concorde.

Feature Wall

Feature tile goes on

The rest of the room was tiled with “Trust” in silver, by Atlas Concorde again from Ripon Interiors. And the floor tiles from the Atlas Concorde Trust range were laid. As you can see from the image below, we are on the home stretch; the Roca Dama-N Wall Hung Toilet with Soft Close Seat is fitted and the radiator from Redroom is hung on the wall. The vanity unit from Roca which is part of the newly released Victoria N range is fitted alongside a tall storage cabinet from the range and the mirror also from Roca is hung on the wall.

Nearly there

almost finished!

As you can see, the new toilet, looks so much better, brighter cleaner and most of all welcoming. Everyone in the office is so much happier with the new bathroom and it’s much better when we have visitors. Not only does the bathroom look better, it also performs better. It’s much more ecological, saving water with the duel flush on the toilet and the water saving tap. Finally, the office cleaner also prefers it, as it is so much easier to clean!

Grand Designs Watch – The Old Cinema

Our favourite home design show is now back on the TV, so we will be eagerly watching episodes of Grand designs every week for products available on UK Bathrooms which are featured on the show. Hopefully giving you some home improvement inspiration.

This week’s grand project is a decaying classic 1920s cinema which is in Thorne in South Yorkshire. Gwyn and Kate are looking for more space for their family and originally wanted to knock down the whole old building. However the local council refused them permission, so instead they are setting out on a restoration project to make this building into a family home.

The house was filled with tons of concrete, as they created a new modern interior to this classic building. The stark contrast modern concrete design and the traditional façade of the building made an interesting and beautiful home for the family.

This week the light and airy bathroom mixes modern and classic styles, the classic double ended curved bath from Royce Morgan and the Britton Curve S30toilet stand out against the modern brickwork tiled wall and dark tiled floor. Our Grand Designs bathroom suite featured this week is ideal for a modern or traditional bathroom.

About bathroom sinks

There are a variety of bathroom sing and these can be pedestal, vanity, wall hung or cloakroom style all come in various shapes as well as size.

You can choose a simple functional sink, a 21st century modern contemporary sink, Victorian or Edwardian classical line, all a matter of personal preference and taste of course. Naturally they all do the same function service, but it is how you like to view them and one that is appropriate to your bathroom and home it does require some thought before you decide though.

We suggest that before you make any decision, you should think about the size of the room, who uses it, how often, is it just to wash your hands or is it for all the family to use? Will you require storage; have a wish to hide all the pipework, or do you want something that is that bit different? No matter what kind of sink that you require, you can be certain that at the UK Bathrooms sinks web page you will find something that is just right whether you have a super modern sleek and luxurious bathroom, or something more traditional, for example if you want a space saving cloakroom sink take a look at the Roca that’s a modern rectangular design with the tap at one end and only 250mm deep, we have a sink to fit your requirements.
