What material should my new bath be made of?

What should my new bath be made of? Acrylic or Steel?

We often get asked what is the best material for a bath to be made of. Here we look at the two main types of material for a bathtub, Acrylic and Steel. This will hopefully help you decide which is the best choice for you.

The bathroom industry has moved on in leaps and bounds when it comes to the old bath in front of the stove every Sunday! Nowadays there is a plethora of baths available, from luxury freestanding baths to whirlpool tubs.  But choosing which one is right for you and your family isn’t so easy. You need to consider the style of bathtub, the design and the size as well as the material the tub is made from.

So what materials are baths made from?

Most contemporary baths are made from one of just two main materials:

  • Acrylic which is a synthetic plastic material
  • Steel which is a hardwearing metal alloy

However, in your search for a new bath you can also find baths made from cast iron, stone, tin, copper and nickel.  Before making your choice, let’s have a look at the two most popular baths acrylic and steel.

What are the benefits of an acrylic bath?

Cheaper

Acrylic baths are the number one choice in the modern bathroom. They cost less than a steel bath to manufacture so they are cheaper than a steel bath.

Strong and durable

An acrylic bath is just as strong as a steel bath, usually being reinforced with glass fibre. No longer do acrylic baths suffer from flexibility, modern manufacturing methods resolved this some time ago. If you want a bath that is strong and durable at a budget price then an acrylic bath is the right choice for you.  The material is also highly resistant to staining and scratches so it’s a great option for a busy family bathroom.

Feels warm

One added benefit which you may not think of is that an acrylic bath feels so much warmer to the touch than a steel bath.

What are the benefits of a bath made from steel?

Whilst not as popular as the acrylic bath, steel baths are our next best seller and benefit from a number of key points.

Retain warmth

So, a steel bath may not be a warm to touch as an acrylic bath but it will retain heat for longer. Great if you like a very long soak in the bath.

Designer look

Steel is a more traditional material and can add that designer look you may long for. They also feel more solid because of the nature of the material. There are some gorgeous baths made from steel with clean lines and stylish appearance.

Coated in enamel

To achieve a crisp white finish a steel bath is coated with enamel. While this gives your new steel bath a great aesthetic the bath may chip or scratch a little more easily, this just means you have to be a little more careful. With care a steel bath will last for years.

Green credentials

Steel can be recycled, so when the time comes for you to replace your steel bath you can still do your bit to save the planet.

Let’s recap…

Acrylic baths

  • Cheaper, lower priced
  • Hardwearing and resistant to stains and scratches
  • Warm to touch
  • Great choice in sizes and shapes
  • Brilliant for families and everyday use

Steel baths

  • Great designer options
  • Good for careful owners
  • Strong solid construction
  • Bright white enamel coating
  • Retains heat

Some further questions and answers

Are metal baths better than acrylic?

Both options have advantages and the choice is down to your own personal requirements.  For example: if you have a family and the bath is going to be used by everyone every day then acrylic will not scratch or stain as much as a steel bath.

What is the best material for a bath?

Acrylic is the most popular material for a bath because of its hardwearing properties and because it is usually at a lower price than a steel bath. However again this is down to your personal choice and your lifestyle, a steel bath may offer a more stylish look to complement your bathroom.

Will an acrylic bath stain or go yellow?

A good quality acrylic bathtub will not stain or go yellow, they are also resistant to scratches so ideal to use daily.

Which bath is easier to care for and maintain?

Acrylic is a tougher material and is more resistant to scratches and stains but both steel and acrylic are relatively easy to care for. Regular washing with a non-abrasive cleaner and sponge will keep them in great condition.

Standard Size Bath – UK dimensions

The standard bath size

Across the UK the standard size bath is 1700mm by 700mm. However, baths are available across the spectrum – small to large.

How are bath sizes measured

In the United Kingdom, the industry standard is to use the metric system when talking about measurements. In some descriptions, you will find the measurements inches as well. When measuring a bath there can be two different variations. For something like a double-ended bath, we measure the length or longest side of the bath by the width. With something like a Freestanding bath, we measure the width by the depth by the height so you can get the best feel for the dimensions.

(Width) x (depth) x (height) or (length x width)

How do UK bath sizes differ?

Longest side
Corner Baths 1200mm-1800mm
Double Ended Baths 1600mm-1900mm
Freestanding Baths 1400mm-1850mm
Shower Baths 1250mm-1850mm
Single Ended Baths 1050mm-1900mm
Whirlpool Baths 1700mm-1900mm

Corner Baths

Standard sizes: 1200mm to 1800mm (longest side).

Corner baths are a practical solution to small or interesting spaces. They create unique and beautiful areas to relax that most other baths wouldn’t. Offset & Space saver baths are the modernized children of the corner bath. They are longer in shape as they take on a slightly more traditional rectangular shape than a square. Both optimize the space used within the bathroom. The offset however, also focuses on optimizing bathing space where-as the space-saver doesn’t.

Double-ended Baths

Standard size: 1600mm to 1900mm (longest side).

Double-ended baths are designed to create a statement. They are large baths made for long baths. Let these baths cover you in a sense of pure opulence as you absorb the highest feeling of luxury. These Bathtubs will suit any bathroom style, we would recommend either a traditional or Modern Contemporary.

Freestanding Baths

Standard size: 1400mm to 1850mm (longest side).

As we enter this new decade, we look back at the roaring twenties. They were full of elegance and glamour, and that is what the Freestanding/slipper baths will bring to your bathroom. They are distinct and fashionable designs with the versatility to be able to change location. Freestanding baths come in two styles; traditional and contemporary. Traditional freestanding baths are more likely to have feet. Whereas contemporary are more likely to be circular or rectangular with a more solid form. These are on a whole, our deepest baths and will allow for your deepest soaks.

Shower Baths

Standard side: 1250mm to 1850mm (longest side).

Are you struggling with the decision to have a bath or shower? Well, why not save on space and go for a Shower Bath! There are hundreds of different bath and shower combinations so you can optimize as much space as possible. The baths themselves come in so many different lengths and widths. It’s easy to see why these are the most common baths in English homes across the country.

Single-ended Baths

Standard side: 1050mm to 1900mm (longest side).

The Single-ended baths have an amazing ability to seamlessly fuse into any bathroom, large or small. As you can see by the length measurement, they have the largest range between sizes of all our types of baths. Plenty of choices. Our Single-ended bath range encompasses fitted, freestanding, and whirlpool baths. Which makes them a very diverse range of baths for your bathroom.

Whirlpool Baths

Standard size: 1700mm to 1800mm (longest side).

Our Whirlpool baths will massage you using jets, whirlpool, or airpool functions. They come in a variety of designs, shapes, and sizes. Some of those being corner units, inset rounded baths, freestanding units, and spacious double ended baths. In the past, whirlpool/jacuzzi baths were seen to be exclusive to the one percent. But as new technologies and time has passed this thought has stayed in the past. Now, our baths are accessible to all and we make sure all of our baths perform at the highest specifications.

What is the smallest sized bath we sell?

The Bette Hip Steel Bath: 1050mm x 650mm

The Bette hip Steel Bath was created with longevity made in mind. It has an enamel coating that will protect your bath against dirt, color fading, and scratches for years to come. Bette also has a thirty-year guarantee for this bath. The bath itself has a stepped interior, optimized for the ultimate comfort when sitting. This bath especially is ideal for someone with mobility challenges and is a versatile unit that can be fitted into any bathroom space with ease.

What is the largest sized bath we sell?

What is the perfect ratio of Bath to Bathroom size?

When choosing a bath for your bathroom, it is important that you take into account a mathematical equation called the Golden Ratio. The Golden ratio has been used repeatedly in history. Especially in several iconic architectural buildings, sculptures, paintings, and interiors. It is, very simply, the perfect balance (scale and proportion) of a space or object. The ratio is 1.618 or 60:30:10 or 60:40.

By understanding the Golden Ratio you can help give your bathroom that surreal feeling of fulfillment. You can apply the Golden Ratio to all aspects of your bathroom; the tiles, the color scheme, the lighting, the furniture. When it comes to baths and furniture, they should not take up more than 60% of the entire floor space of the bathroom. Either side of this percentage and your bathroom will either feel too scarce or too crowded.

Design service to help you create your dream bathroom

At Ukbathrooms we offer a 3D design service so we can help you design and create your dream balanced bathroom. Our expert design consultants have 20 years of collective design experience. We will advise, product source, help with the planning process and create a bathroom design through a 3D render. The renders are to scale, using exact measurements of your bathroom and all of the units.

We asked the opinion of one of our very own amazingly talented design consultants their views on the matter:

Lisa from our 3D design service

“The bath is often the main focal point of the bathroom and can create a stunning design feature.  With so many baths to choose from. Copper to tin, acrylic to resin, built-in to freestanding. The clean lines of a contemporary style to ornately sumptuously traditional. It can be a minefield, often dictated by the size and shape of the room it’s in.

What is the normal size of a bath?

The most common bath size in the UK is approximately 1700mm in length and 700mm wide. A small bath could be around 1400mm-1500mm long and 700mm wide. A large bath will be roughly 1800mm long and around 800mm wide. For each size bathtub, the recommended space around your bathtub should be at least 760mm for it to be comfortable.

Is There A Perfect Ratio of Bath to Bathroom Size?

With all the variables of room sizes, is there a ratio that is applicable to all bathrooms?  As bathrooms get bigger, bathtubs generally don’t exceed 2000mm in length. However, your perfect tub can be worked out with common-sense, personal preference, and how you want to use your bathroom along with your room size.  There is, in fact, a Golden Ratio. Which can act as a guide, however, everyone will have individual requirements. This is the most important point to consider.

A larger room can accommodate a freestanding bathtub which may sit on an angle within the room, creating a design feature. Whilst a smaller space may opt for a shorter bath with an overhead shower, or indeed, a more spacious feeling corner bath. Whilst these practicalities are important and will often guide the size of bath you choose. What is most important is how you desire your bathroom experience to be. With such a vast array of designs, sizes, materials and styles to choose from, your perfect bathroom is just out there waiting for you.” – Lisa Watson.

Trojan Whirlpool Baths

Providing the ideal of luxury and wellness in your home Trojan whirlpool baths are now available at UK Bathrooms.

Health benefits of a whirlpool bath

We’re all aware that a bath is one of the best ways to de-stress and unwind at the end of a long day, but a whirlpool bath can provide you with a number of health benefits. The integrated jets will massage your muscles and hydrotherapy gently massages and stimulates joints to ease any aches and pains.  A whirlpool bath will also help to improve blood circulation throughout your body.
Whirlpool baths also actively reduce the hormone cortisol. The more cortisol in your bloodstream, the higher your blood pressure and the higher your stress levels.
And let’s not forget our skin, every single day skin absorbs pollutants and a whirlpool bath provides the relaxing experience to draw out these pollutants helping you to feel refreshed. Enjoying a whirlpool bath in the evening will encourage the production of melatonin in your body which will help you sleep better.

Improved technology in whirlpool baths

Invented by the Jacuzzi brothers in the 1950s, whirlpool bath technology has significantly advanced over the years and today they are quieter and have excellent drainage systems. More importantly they are no longer just a luxury to be enjoyed by the rich and famous.
So how does a whirlpool bath work? Very simply, a system of pumps sucks your bath water into a system of jets, these powerful jets then propel the water back into your bath, mixing it with air which produces the lovely bubbles that help soothe and relax our body and mind.

Trojan Cascade 14 Jet Double Ended Whirlpool Bath

Trojan have become one of the largest manufacturers of acrylic baths in Europe.  Their reputation for manufacturing high quality products continues to grow as they set the standard in bath manufacturing. The Trojan Cascade 14 jet double ended whirlpool bath incorporates a hand built 14 jet system which is operated via a deck mounted chrome pneumatic control ensuring a powerful hydro-massage effect. The system has a high flow pump keeping noise to a minimum and a child proof filter stops the water flow in seconds in case of a blockage.

This affordable luxury for your bathroom is available with a choice of either 6 or 14 jets, single ended or double ended, with or without side and end panels.
