Uncluttered Minimalist Styling

If you prefer a more simplistic look, uncluttered minimalist styling may be right up your alley. This involves keeping surfaces clear and free of clutter, as well as using clean lines and simple shapes in furniture and fittings. You may also want to consider using hidden storage to keep things out of sight.

Backlit Mirrors

Backlit mirrors are a must-have in any modern bathroom. Not only do they look great, but they’re also very practical as they provide extra light when needed. You can choose from a variety of designs, from simple rectangular mirrors to more elaborate ones with built-in shelving or cabinets.

Seamless Glass Showers

For something really sleek and modern, why not install a seamless glass shower? These showers have clean lines and no visible frames or joints, giving them a very minimalistic look. They’re perfect for small bathrooms as they don’t take up much space and make the room appear bigger than it actually is. Just be aware that glass showers do require more maintenance than other types – they need to be cleaned regularly to prevent soap scum build-up.

Japandi Bathrooms

VitrA Sento

Interior designers across the globe are loving Japandi – the simple and functional shared focus from Japan and Scandinavia.

Japanese and Scandinavia styling

More and more of us are wanting a spa-like bathroom. The zen-like, tranquil settings of the natural hot springs found throughout Japan provide inspiration.

Scandinavia or ‘Scandi’ style bathrooms with their minimalist, sleek and functional offering have also become hugely popular, this popularity has been further influenced with crime dramas such as The Bridge, The Killing, Thin Blue Line and The Valhalla Murders! And don’t we all like a good shop at Ikea!

Whilst there are obvious differences, Scandi and Japanese styles have lots in common. For instance, they both make use of organic, natural materials and both use textures resulting in a contemporary, simplistic look.

Let’s have a look at what Japandi is

Japandi is a fusion of styles from both Japan and Scandinavia. To understand this further we need to consider three concepts; wabi-sabi, lagom and hygge.

Wabi-sabi translates from Japanese as ‘finding the beauty in imperfection’. Think of a natural form that is far from perfect yet still beautiful because of its imperfections. Such as a piece of oak with splits, growth rings, irregular grains and knots. These imperfections make each piece of wood unique, adding character and enhancing the beauty of this natural material.

Lagom comes from the Swedish proverb “lagom ar bast” meaning “just enough”. Lagom translates to keeping simple and free of clutter.

Hygge is a Norwegian/Danish word and is more of a feeling that you get when you are home, when you are warm and cosy, happy and relaxed. Imagine being in front of a roaring log fire, sat on a gorgeous sheepskin rug – that is hygge.

Japanese and Scandinavian – similarities in design

Both Japanese and Scandinavian cultures place high value on quality and workmanship and produce minimalistic, simple furniture. Both also use organic, natural materials such as wood, stone and glass. Similarities in design can also be found in the use of natural colours, with both favouring a neutral palette for their interior design.

What are the features of Japandi styling?

Japandi features the use of natural, organic materials and natural colours. Styling is simple and uncluttered and sustainability is at the heart of Japandi with items built to last, handmade yet functional pieces are used wherever possible.

When you imagine Japandi style then think harmony, tranquility and relaxation.  Your Japandi bathroom will be the place where you can chill and de-stress.

How to get the Japandi look

The main thing to remember when you’re creating your Japandi bathroom is to keep it simple, don’t crowd the room, don’t overdress the space. Choose your fixtures and fitting with care, buying pieces that are durable and that will stand the test of time.

Keep your colour palette neutral to achieve the Japandi look. Add plants to enhance the natural feel of your bathroom. Opt for ambient lighting and use organic materials in your design such as a wooden vanity unit or shelving.  Granite and stone are other natural materials that work well to achieve the Japandi style.

A freestanding bath with clean lines will work beautifully. Remember the bigger the bath the more precious water you will use. We love the Villeroy and Boch Theano Freestanding Bath which comes in two sizes.

Your shower area should be kept minimal, try to incorporate those natural elements and remember that Japandi style is also about balance light and dark. Choose a black framed shower panel such as the Crosswater Design 8 Matt Black Walk In Shower Panel. Introduce texture with natural materials such as the Crosswater Arena 1000mm Wall-Hung Vanity Unit in Modern Oak.

The Villeroy and Boch Antheus Wall Hung Rimless WC will sit (excuse the pun) beautifully in your Japandi bathroom with its clean modern lines. This toilet’s rimless bowl technology eliminates the rim from the inside of the toilet bowl, thanks to the newly developed flush type. Not only does the toilet look more great but hygiene is improved as the rimless bowl is 95% more hygienic than a normal toilet bowl.

How to accessorise your Japandi bathroom

This is an easy one – as you need to keep your accessories to a minimum. Think functional, for instance toilet brush holder, soap dish, toilet roll holder – and keep other clutter tucked away. Use natural wicker baskets if you need extra storage space – they are ideal to hide away extra toilet rolls and hand towels!

Bath mats and bathroom towels should be neutral in colour.  But don’t forget the odd plant or two will enhance the space.

CURVE APPEAL FOR YOUR BATHROOM

If you want to be ahead of trend then get curve appeal in your new bathroom. Curvaceous bathrooms are predicted to be the trend for 2022.

Curves are in

These days our bathrooms need to be not just functional but also a sanctuary of relaxation. A place where we can shut out the world for a little while and rest. And that’s why we agree with Pinterest’s new ‘Predicts’ that curves and soft lines are going to be big in 2022.

New bathroom collections do away with square, harsh edges and introduce a softer, gentler style that really does give your space that chilled out vibe.

Adopt a rounded approach

It’s not just bathroom furniture that’s going curvy. It’s everything from toilet to basin, bath to showerhead, taps to mirrors. This ‘rounded’ approach will make your bathroom feel that little bit more indulgent. A place where you can recharge your batteries, whatever time of day.

VitrA’s new Liquid by Tom Dixon

One of the most exciting collections with curve appeal is the recently launched VitrA Liquid.  Liquid is a unique collaboration between designer Tom Dixon and the leading bathroom brand and is all about expressive minimalism. It’s soft and rounded forms are generous in proportion and eradicate all sharp edges from the bathroom.

All elements of the bathroom

As well as looking good, the collection is tactile and functional and encompasses all elements of the bathroom, from ceramics to brassware, tiles to accessories.

Ceramics have been extended beyond the traditional realms of basins and sanitaryware, including a rotund stool which can be used in the shower or anywhere else in the home.

Tom Dixon’s theme continues into the expressive showerheads and controls.  The whole collection incorporates fatter, softer lines that are more generous, long-lasting and stronger.

Not just for the home

Taps and showers are available in chrome or gloss black finish for a contrast.  The products can be combined flexibly to create a unique style and purpose and are designed for use either in the home or professional environments, including offices, hotels and restaurants.

At a time when there is more emphasis being placed on the bathroom, this unique collection is both innovative and contemporary and will certainly add curve appeal to your space.

Pantone’s colour of the year 2021

For only the second time in more than 20 years, Pantone’s colour of the year 2021 will be TWO colours: Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and Pantone 13–647 Illuminating.

Two independent colours that show how different elements come together to support one another, a lesson learned by everyone in 2020 and hopefully one we can continue to practice in 2021.

These two colours give us practicality and solidness and at the same time warmth and optimism, the joining of Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating is “one of strength and positivity” says Pantone.  Definitely a story of colour that catches a deep feeling of thoughtfulness along with a promise of sunnier times ahead!

Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating is a cheerful, bright yellow alive and brimming with vivacity. Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray reflects solid and dependable elements, a firm foundation and everlasting qualities.  It is quietly reassuring, standing the test of time and resilient in its nature.

Two colours for 2021 – with a great deal of meaning for us all.

Black Bathrooms

hansgrohe Matt Black

Black is permeating the bathroom. As we enter the shorter months, we’re embracing dark tones and welcoming them into the wash space as we mirror the early nights and moody skies on the horizon.

Why black?

One of the biggest changes in bathroom design in recent years has been its evolution from a functional space, designed with efficiency rather than aesthetics in mind, into a room for enjoyment and wellbeing. The surge in time spent in the bathroom in 2020 especially, saw the bathroom become a place to unwind and enjoy moments of peace in; as other areas of the home became spaces to work, teach and multitask, the bathroom took on the role of a sanctuary. ‘Black has moved into the bathroom as homeowners are seeking a space for privacy and relaxation as busy lives get busier,’ explains Graeme Borchard, MD at UK Bathrooms. ‘Black is a wonderful shade to meditate to and allows overtaxed minds a moment of tranquillity, which is what today’s bathroom is all about.’

How to style a black bathroom

This trend is all about maximum darkness – for the greatest effect, opt for black across as many surfaces and objects in the space as possible to create a calming, cave-like cocoon that’s impactful without overstimulating the senses. Pay attention to textures; mix in different black finishes and materials, from glossy glazes to matt and brushed metals, to create a space which is indulgent and immersive while maintaining the feeling of shelter and protection.

Black fixtures and fittings

The newest launches from a host of luxury brands have been doused in darkness. Shower heads, taps, mixers, screens, panels and all of the fittings in-between, it’s clear that the finish of the moment is deepest black. Be it Matt Back, hansgrohe’s biggest finish of the year which covers the Metropol mixer range, and 53-piece Talis E collection, or the extensive range of Matt Black brassware and bathroom accessories of Crosswater’s MPRO range. Most of Abacus’s range can be covered in black via its Colour My Bathroom offering, and Saneux and Roper Rhodes both have extensive dark collections.

Large black bathroom pieces

Chunkier bathroom objects of all styles are also being coated in rich black. Victoria and Albert’s freestanding baths take on an edgy yet sensuous feel when their soft curves are realised in black. Along with its brassware, much of VitrA’s ceramicware and storage pieces comes in a slick black finish which transforms them into giant sculptural objects. Villeroy and Boch’s ultra-modern Avento vanity units are finished in glossy Crystal Black, the brand’s Antheus unit brings natural texture in black ash, and UK Bathroom’s Essentials Black Square Edge Bath Screen is a whimsical take on the trend, a semi-transparent slice of shadow hovering over the shower. In the traditional sphere, the Sarah Georgian basin and washstand by Burlington is composed of decorative black aluminium and black marble.

‘Black is incredibly versatile, contemporary and chic,’ says Graeme. ‘Black elements in the bathroom create an edge, making a statement while remaining timeless and enduring’. Finish the look with as much black flooring, tiling and paint as you dare, or try a black feature zone around either the sink, bath or shower to add more subtle wow factor.

hansgrohe Matt Black

Matt black comes to the bathroom with slick angles, shapely silhouettes and a modern industrial feel – combine it with bright white ceramics for a bold, contemporary contrast.

We love the new Matt Black brassware range from leading bathroom manufacturer hansgrohe.  hansgrohe has expanded its FinishPlus brassware range to include on trend Matt Black. This recently launched contemporary finish is across hansgrohe’s range of showerheads, basin and bath mixers, shower hoses and accessories.

Warm, reflective and glowing… VitrA’s stunning Copper Brassware & Bathroom Accessories

Copper is a traditional material that has stormed its way back into fashion.  Warm, reflective and glowing it is certainly making all of us here at ukbathrooms.com keen to update our own bathrooms!

We love this stunning range from VitrA, encompassing brassware and accessories all in a choice of finishes including Copper. Pair this metal with natural materials such as wood and marble for an elegant, contemporary look.  The copper trend is showing no sign of slowing down, and current demand is high on our site.  The polished finish from VitrA has a more golden look as opposed to a natural deep orange tone.

Over the past few years metallics have become really popular with the warm copper and brass shades being easy to incorporate in our homes.  In your bathroom, opt for copper taps, shower, waste, exposed bottle trap and matching accessories, use the Copper as a standout feature so it really makes your room pop.

Opulent shades such as Kingfisher blue and teal are a perfect partner to this metal, decadent in tone they are an ideal combination. Equally, a bathroom that uses marble and copper brassware has an appeal that is timeless. Charcoal, smoky greys, blush pink and neutrals also work with this warm finish and can be visually stunning.

Tip – use copper sparingly for more impact – either limit to a gorgeous copper bath or brassware and accessories – less is often more!
