DIY guidelines for bathroom renovation

Many competent people can carry out bathroom renovations but there are some limitations which require planning permission. This may come as a surprise to many people that an existing room requires permission to make alterations, but it is true. Two examples are; all jobs involving electrical wiring within bathrooms or shower enclosures including modifications of existing electrical wiring, and any work that involves electrical wiring within bathrooms or shower rooms, including modifications of existing electrical wiring.

These regulations also apply to all DIY work so if you are planning on renovating your bathroom yourself or doing any other lighting job which falls under these definitions you will be obliged to submit a building notice to your local council as well as pay a small fee to have the work inspected and tested for safety. Whilst it is true that there are many competent DIY enthusiasts who can carry out this work safely, if you are one, make sure you contact the local Building Control Officer. If you carry out electrical work without the proper certification, this can have a negative effect when you come to selling your home and could create problems with the sale.
